Family Loan Program has long, successful driving record
In 1984 TCC created an opportunity for low-income families to achieve self-sufficiency through the Family Loan Program. Funded by The McKnight Foundation, the Family Loan Program is a revolving car loan fund for families with one or more dependent children.
A car is essential for parents living in rural Minnesota and trying to manage work, family and sometimes school. The Family Loan Program can be used for car purchase or repair. To be eligible a person must be employed for at least three months or pursuing a post-secondary education.
Trained, certified TCC Loan Officers administer the program for 14 counties. The Family Loan Program is well designed and self-sustaining. Its long, successful driving record includes a 93 % repayment rate so the loan fund is consistently replenished.
Each car purchased requires a thorough maintenance check-up, an incentive for customers to be smart shoppers and budget for future replacement and repairs. The maximum loan for purchase is $2000; and $700 for repairs. Last year the average loan was $1,700 for car purchase and under $500 for car repair.
